Latest Trends In UAVs

Such systems have been developed in both Israel and the USA. US Army has developed this type of UAVs like GLOBAL HAWK and PREDATOR.
             b. Tactical UAVs. A potentially new concern is the brigade/regimental level tactical UAV systems. Such systems are being considered in Australia, Bahrain, Croatia, France, Germany, Singapore, Sweden, UK, USA (Marine Corps) for applications including over the hill reconnaissance, aerial mine detection, urban warfare, NBC monitoring, and communications relay.
             c. VTOL UAVs. Most of the aforementioned UAVs are using fixed wing aerial platforms. Whereas a distinct interest is starting to be shown in VTOL or STOL UAVs which will be used for urban reconnaissance, surveillance, EW and psychological operations roles during conditions of civilian unrest, strife, littoral warfare, land and sea mine detection, naval communication relay, naval over-the-horizon targeting and landing naval supplies.
             d. Micro UAVs. Interest in these systems has been recognised in France, Germany, Israel, Sweden, UK and USA, but they still require substantial technological hurdles to be overcome. At this point in time, only the USA is making sizeable amounts of money available for R&D and studies relating to the future war fighter's individual UAV. It is envisaged that Micro UAVs will only start to be issued to troops after 2005.
             e. Recoverable Drones. The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has examined armed UAVs as part of its Low Cost Cruise Missile Defense program. Concepts considered include the use of a recoverable drone, carrying inexpensive fire-control sensors and armament, to permit the semi-autonomous engagement of cruise missiles at long range. The drone would be fired by surface-to-air missile batteries, using target data provided by their radars and command-guided to the intercept area. The vehicle would then acquire the cruise missile with on-board sensors, engage it with a weapon such as a Stinger air-to-air missile or a gun, and then either loiters for follow-on attacks or returns to base and be recovered by parachute.
