An Exploration of Victor Frankenstein's Character

He does not share his feelings and desires with many people. While he is working to create a perfect human being, he put on hold all of his social relationships including his relationship with Elizabeth. He did not share the details of his accomplishment with anyone other than Robert Walton, a complete stranger, whom he told out of necessity. He chose to remain silent while Justine stood trial for William's murder, although he knew the identity of the real killer. He puts his studies and his experiments before his family and friends. From observing all of this, it is obvious that Victor is not a very social person. He values his studies and experiments much higher than his relationships with others. He feels that as long as he succeeds at creating life, his relationships with others are not essential.
A lot can be learned by examining a character's actions. Victor is successful at creating life, but as a result of his actions towards his creation, he ends up loosing everyone that is close to him. The creature at first is benevolent but because of Victor's actions towards him, the creature becomes vengeful. Mentally, the creature is perfect, but his physical appearance is hideous. Because of this, Victor believes that he has failed and casts the creature out of his life. On page 42, he states: "How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God!- This statement shows that Victor is somewhat superficial in the way he looks at people. He loves Elizabeth because she is beautiful, but he is disgusted by the creature because of his appearance. And in order to cover up his creation, he refuses to reveal the identity of William's killer. He wants to avoid having to explain his actions to anyone so he does not tell anyone about the creature, or what he has done.
