The Patriot (Hollywood vs. History)

Throughout the years, Hollywood has always found a way to change a historical event into an action/adventure/drama movie. A very renowned movie, "The Patriot", has had a lot of controversial discussions about what events or facts really took place and which ones where made up to make the story more attractive for movie watchers. It is considered a fictional story with a serious historical backdrop.
The film begins in 1776 when the colonials are debating weather or not to go to war against the British and seek their independence. This part of the movie is the most historically accurate and broad. Everything regarding their problems against the British and the decisions they took did take place. In April of 1776, a number of counsels where held in the colonies to determine the measures they would take. In April 6, 1776 the continental congress prohibited the shipment of British goods to the colonies, and on April 12 of the same year, the North Carolina assembly was the first to empower its delegates in the continental congress to vote for independence from Britain.
In the movie, Mel Gibson plays Benjamin Martin, a character based on different people of that time, but primarily Francis Marion who was accredited for inventing guerrilla warfare. Benjamin Martin is a Militia General who leads them in a battle against King George III`s red coats. Director Spike lee, one of the most prominent black directors was disgusted at the fact that they nearly eliminated everything related to black slavery. The Americans continued to support slavery for four decades after the British had already abolished it completely, and to the benefit of the movie, the main character was a non slave holder which in fact the character was really based on a rapist who hunted Indians and kept slaves. Another flaw that the movie had, was that the word nigger is never used, the fact is that it existed and was very commonly used.
