Baz Lurmann

For my essay I have chosen to study the structure, sequence and patterns within the works of Baz Luhrmann.
             Introduction.
Baz Lurhamann (real name BazMark Anthony Luhrmann), born in 1962, is known throughout households most famously for his directing, writing and production work on the hit film Moulin Rouge, he is also well known for his chart topping song "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen" released in 1999.
Critics have not always agreed with the way in which Luhrmann works, saying his films are completely false, however this has not stopped him becoming one of the most famous and most accredited directors of the modern day. I personally am a huge fan of his work, and would have to say that my favourite examples of his works are "Strictly Ballroom" (1992), "William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1996) and (my personal favourite) "Moulin Rouge" (2001). I have chosen to focus mainly on these three films not only because they are personal favourites, but also there are many patterns recognisable within these films. .
The works of Luhrmann always have a certain twist to them making them stand out from any other kind of film works. Over the years he has won many awards for his greatest works including a number of AFA's (Australian film awards), and many BAFTA's for "Romeo and Juliet" and "Strictly Ballroom". This must mean that contrasting what the critics say he must be doing something right. These successes do not only appear on the cinema screen. He has captured popular and critical imagination internationally with works throughout film, Opera, music, theatre and events. His first Opera was written between the success of "Strictly Ballroom" and "Romeo and Juliet" entitled "Lost Lake", created with composer Felix Meahger. This was quickly followed by Dance Hall a large-scale musical event staged at Sydney Opera house. His latest work is the up and coming "Alexander the Great" to be released in 2004.
