Formerly known as the town plaza, today the Mall is the place where people gather to undertake the activity of commerce. Filled with an extended variety of stores, the Mall is the place where modern day merchants distribute and sell their products to an eager population. Each store inside a mall has a different focus. Even though there are many different stores that sell the same products, they target different groups of people. Since each store wants to bring in a specific group of the population, their strategy is very unique. There are three aspects inside a store that make it possible to contrast very similar stores inside a mall. These three characteristics are: store layout, customer service, and price. The stores JC Penny and Bloomingdale's sell the same type of goods and are known to have a strong tradition in the American retail market. .
Layout. The store layout is known as the configuration used to organize the isles inside the floor. This aspect controls the circulation inside the store and directs the customer towards the products. In JC Penny, the isles are parallel to each other and maintain a very rigid flow. This helps to use more floor space and gives the customer a more familiar movement inside the store. On the other hand, Bloomingdale's uses a very dynamic configuration. Their isles are scattered in an irregular pattern, but maintain an order. This gives the customer more freedom to have access to every corner of the floor, while it highlights better each product.
Customer Service. The way that the sales representatives interact with the customers is called Customer Service. While in JC Penny the representatives let the customer wonder around the floor, in Bloomies, the floor staff is much more dedicated to satisfy each of the customer's needs.
