Jem Growing Up


"Atticus," his voice was distant, "can you come here a minute, sir?"" (Lee 141) Brothers are not supposed to tell on their sister or friends. By telling Atticus about Dill hiding, Jem breaks the childhood understanding to not "tell" on each other. This shows that Jem was no longer a little child and he knows to address adults when something wrong happens, like when you find a child under a bed hiding because he ran away from home. Because of Jem's good deed, Miss Alexandra knows about Dill's whereabouts. .
             When Atticus hears that some of the men in Maycomb were planning to lynch Tom Robinson, he decides to go to the Maycomb jail and watch him. Atticus went there with no protection at all- he was in great danger. When Atticus left for the Maycomb jail, Jem dresses up so he could follow Atticus. When Scout sees Jem getting ready to leave, she decides to come along and bring Dill. "An old campaigner, he did not speak until we were on the sidewalk. "What's up?" "Jem's got the look-arounds," an affliction Calpurnia said all boys caught at his age. "I've just got this feeling," Jem said, "just this feeling."" (Lee 149) Jem knows that something awful was going to happen to Atticus, so he decides to follow him even though Atticus specifically said to sleep. Jem disobeyed his father because he cared about him and his safety. Just as Jem suspects, a large number of men arrives at Atticus" location with cruel intentions- they were planning to put the law into their own hands and kill Tom Robinson. Just as they were about to hurt Atticus, Scout, Dill and Jem come just in time. Atticus knows that it is dangerous for children to be in the jail, so Atticus tells Jem for him, Scout and Dill to leave. "In the midst of this strange assembly, Atticus stood trying to make Jem mind him. "I ain't going," was his steady answer to Atticus's threats, requests, and finally, "Please Jem, take them home."" (Lee 153) Jem knows something bad was going to happen to Atticus, so he did not leave when Atticus asked him to.
