A big Little Deal

Everybody loves Halloween, especially when you"re a little kid. The bright lights, scary stories and candy consumption really capture a person's attention. When I was five years young, my mom and I went to Teacher's Edition, a store that caters to teachers and people interested in educational equipment. It was a couple of days before Halloween and I was juiced; absolutely thrilled. After our trip to this, in my mind, boring store, we were going to get a costume and candy! Well, it took awhile, but the call of my mom saying Joe, we are going couldn't come soon enough. While perusing the trinkets standing on my tip toes adorning the checkout counter, my eyes marked some erasers featuring witches and monsters. As my tired toes gave out, one distinguished itself from the rest. It was a black witch sitting on a broomstick. I again examined the pile of erasers, my chubby hand made a stab at the bunch. Once more I lowered myself to my regular height, and my heart rose as I saw I had made the right selection. Running over to my mom, I asked her can I get this. Please! I"ll pay you back when we get home. Of course, I had no money because I was a very broke little kid, who scrounged for money by taking clothes out the dryer or washing machine. That was how I made my dough. My mom said, No, not now. Maybe another time. I thought she hadn't heard me correctly because it was Halloween and this eraser spread the spirit. Again, I was politely rebuffed. This just crushed and what I perceived to be the collective spirit. How could my mom just act like this wasn't such a big deal? I was mad. Brimming with anger, it soon overflowed my glass of judgment. I put that eraser in my hand and I walked out of the store resolute. My hastily concocted plan had a little problem. I didn't have any pockets, so I had to sit on my prize on the way to Kroger. My head was pounding the whole time on this little journey to the grocers.
