On Friendship

" (On Friendship par.2) Friendless people are empty and their hearts rust. As a famous quote goes, "No man is an island," so is it true that you can never really survive life without opening up to someone, confiding in him/her and sharing to them the cruelties of the world. There is an urge to want to have a friend. As du Plessix Gray said, " a human need for friendship.".
What is friendship in general? It's about being there. Making your presence felt to your friend. Extending not only your hand but also your heart. It's about being sensitive and feeling for your friend; understanding what he/she is going through. It's not judging whether he/she makes the right decision or not. It's the support you give that's important, standing by their side regardless of the choice they make. It's "being there during the good times and the bad" (Girlfriend Nov. 2002), and not only during the blissful moments. At troubled times, it is "listening to your friend and offering some advices" (Girlfriend Nov. 2002). At times of their triumph and success, it is being happy for them sincerely! At times of sadness, it is having shoulders soggy from their tears, not reprimanding her because you told her to do this or that. It is basically letting your friends feel that you"re just behind them no matter what they've gotten themselves into.
Friendship should be selfless. Giving and sharing without expecting anything back as La Rochefoucauld found out that" friendship is the only human bond in which the tyrannical cycle of our self-love seems broken"; "we can love each other even more than love ourselves" (On Friendship par.6). A friendship isn't going to last long if a person only loves himself. It should be shared to others not to yourself. That's why according to Cicero, "the man least capable of friendship is the tyrant" since the tyrant has the need for power over the other, to show superiority and therefore is the man most likely to have an unsuccessful relationship with human beings.
