The chosen area is bound by the nature of the investigation, it must be accessible and most importantly safe. Safety can be ensured by careful planning and preparation. The area cannot be to short so as limit the number of transects. Nor can it be too narrow so as to have too few ridges and slacks to allow measurable levels of succession. The area must have significant levels of vegetation so that there is ample opportunity to measure and record without damaging the environment. Sand dunes are fragile ecosystems and the greatest care must be taken when investigating them so as not to cause damage that could endanger the ecosystem. Human influences must therefore be taken into account when selecting the area of study, and area of dunes with significant development is likely to have different physical characteristics to one which is still in its original state. These physical differences can be investigated further in terms of succession, perhaps finding a area with both substantial and little human development and investigating the vegetation at both points, hence proving or disproving the above comments. .
Once an area is chosen it must then be mapped, mapping a large area is a time consuming process and as this is only a short-term field study it would be much more effective to choose small areas of study first and then map only these area saving considerable amounts of time. The small areas of study must represent the dune system whole area to ensure to results are valid and non-bias. The dune system size should be measured, this can be done reasonably accurately using a 1:25000 map or very accurately using surveying equipment, which can vary from ranging poles and a tape measure to GPS mapping systems. Once the width and length of dune system has been accurately calculated, small areas of study can be located.
