Guernica and the Spanish Cival War


             On May 10th of 1936 Niceto Alcala Zamora was removed from the position as president and replaced by Manuel Azaña. Soon afterwards Spanish Army officers began plotting to defeat the Popular Front government. This resulted in the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War on July 17th of 1936. This is where the Spanish Civil war fits into the greater context of WWII. After the war it was believed that the government of General Francisco Franco arranged the executions of 100,000 Republican prisoners. It is estimated that another 35,000 Republicans died in concentration camps in the years that followed the war. .
             After the war, Franco established a government and on April 7th of 1938 he joined the Anti-COM intern Pact. However, Franco declared the neutrality of Spain on the outbreak of the Second World War. Adolph Hitler tried hard to get Franco to change his mind. In their negotiations Franco demanded that in any postwar settlement he wanted control of Gibraltar, French Morocco, a portion of Algeria and parts of Africa. .
             In the painting by Picasso, the outcome of the city of Guernica is displayed with many different symbols and meanings. It explains who was in charge of the operation and the methods they used to attack Guernica. This painting is a painting depicting the horror of the bombing of Guernica. .
             There were many symbols displayed in the painting. It was of horses and bulls instead of showing planes, bombs and death. A terror of bulls was used as one symbol. Another was of a horse's head. This was a large section of the painting. Picasso also made a contrast between light and dark and he showed chaos. A third symbol was of a tongue. It was different than the body because it was made to look like a spear.
             Art relates to the healing process because people can look at the problems of society from different perspectives. Picasso decided to draw this painting because it helped the people to see what they would be turning into.
