(Doc C) If America didn't start gaining some more land with raw materials who knows if the economy would have failed then or not. As a result of the Spanish-American War, in the Treaty of Paris the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico all ceded to the U.S. and the U.S. also gave Spain $20 million dollars for the Philippines. Along with Mahan, Senator Albert J. Beveridge in a speech to Congress in the Congressional Record (1900), it said that because of the expansion into the Philippines as a result the U.S. wont and it can't stop trading but because of the U.S. owning the Philippines the trade with Asia and America will only increase, and the reason why this has happened to the U.S. is because it is part of God's will. (Doc E) Because America was able to negotiate land with other countries they felt like it was their duty to help the land that they gained to prosper and come like us.
Before and after the Spanish-American war the U.S. was able to gain land through negotiations and because of the negotiations and the land they gained, many American citizen felt that it was Manifest Destiny and the will of God coming true. After the Revolutionary War the U.S. gained the addition of 1783 as a result of the Treaty of Paris. Many Americans felt like this land belonged to the U.S. and not the Indians and that we were suppose to help the Indians become better civilized people. When Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, the U.S. became partners with them and eventually in 1845 the U.S. annexed Texas because they felt that, that land belonged to them and that it was our duty to help them become one of us. In Theodore Roosevelt's Annual Message to Congress on December 6, 1904, Roosevelt made a statement about the expansion that the U.S. was involved in and said that America isn't empire hungry, we are just worried about the poor countries around up and we want to make sure that they are able to survive and prosper with America's help.
