Inconceivable Breach (Heart of Darkness)

Nature lives forever, its strength endures, while cities rise and fall, built upon the great earth. Man attempts to build a barrier from the truth within themselves fighting to remain this side of the darkness. The invisible is the wall that separates the lives we build ourselves on, a superficial peace within our hearts. Nature represents the truth, the powerful truth that will overcome any lie a person strives to resurrect. It sees through the frail form of humans and despite mans vain attempts to gild the darkness, will always be there, waiting discovery. While some people hide themselves in the cocoon of their things, others succumb to the darkness. However, even the characters that live in the light, away from the truth will catch a glimpse of "the horror" not only around them, but inside them. It is what one does from that point that will differentiate their paths. .
Marlow touches the film separating the two worlds in his contact with the light forsaken Kurtz, forcing him to question his preconceived notions of truth. Marlow will is the only barrier of sanity that he contains and, as he approaches this "heart of darkness, his inner restraint is tested to its extent. He experiences case after case illustrating the men that the jungle transforms. This exemplifies just how close to the truth marlow has come. During his conversation with the brick master he remarks, "if I tried I could poke my forefinger through him, and would find nothing inside but a little loose dirt, maybe" (76). This man denies the truth around him and become but a wraith in his self fabricated reality. There is no recognition of nature surrounding him as he talks incessantly about himself, or the nature that lies within him. He contains nothing but the falsity of his meaningless convictions. Marlow enters a reality parallel to his own yet altogether different. He leaves one of light, innocence, and lies contrasting this reality of truth, shadows, and horror.
