Analysis of the poem "Noises from the school".
Reading the poem noises from the school by Patricia Beer we can notice that the mood of the poem is constantly changing, starting of in stanza one the poet calm, eager even acting a little impatient to start work "wait for some stirring of the pool", then becoming angry as the noises start to effect her intensely. In stanza six we have noticed drastic changes throughout, so to find her calm, relaxed and happy that the noises have "died away" shows us that after reaching peak of anger in stanza five she can only go back to the town silence that she has always known. .
The audience aimed at is either young children teaching them that some things have changed e.g. empty fields now have houses on them "concrete and foul air" and that some things haven't changed e.g. singing the same song. Maybe the writer is talking about her childhood, comparing today's life as a child and her own memory's of playtime etc. .
The purpose of the poem is to show how life changes but even in society today things haven't changed and the noises you hear from the school have all been heard before. Also that she is expressing her feelings about her disturbing situation, to bring a clear attraction about the forever, changing environment.
The poet has a negative attitude to school, she doesn't like change, and she likes things to stay the same. Beer doesn't like the fact the once beautiful fields lived in by God has been built on.
It is quite clear that the poet has an obsession with time. Each stanza contains something about time; each time is different, again showing change of time of the day, Change of mood and lack of inspiration .
The language of the poet uses is intense, violent adjectives are often used to express her anger of having no work done. Onomatopoeia is used in the poem "clattering" to show her anger in more detail to give us a clearer idea of her frustration throughout the poem.
