Connor and her mother started to become very interested in this movement and went to the train station to see Susan B. Anthony arrive in Albany. Connors aunt and uncle saw them there and told her father, when Connor's father came home drunk that night he was going to hit Connor with the belt for not listening to him but Connor's mother told him no and he hit her instead. After this Connor and her mother just become more involved with the movement and started to help out at a house that was the "headquarters" for the suffragists. Connor and Doreen were asked to volunteer to help and so they did. Almost everyday after school the girls would go to the house and help the women with whatever they needed. Soon Nora, Connor's mother, came too to help out. They offered to pay her but she refused, she told them that she just wanted to help out some days, but that soon became everyday from morning to night. Connor and her mother were happy but knew that if Connor's father, Donal, ever found out that they would be in huge trouble.
Unfortunately that was what happened, Connor slipped and said something that Susan B. Anthony had said to her and her father got extremely angry. Nora and Donal fought with words at first and then because Donal was drunk again he fought with his fists soon after. He punched Nora in the face and turned and picked up Connor and whipped her with his belt. After when he was done he just went to bed to get sleep for tomorrow and be well rested for work. Connor and her mother that night packed their things and left as soon as possible. For the night they went to Washington Park and slept on the bench and would go to mass the next morning.
When they awoke the next morning they had realized that they missed the first mass and went to Bertha's home, which was where they were helping the suffragists. When they got there to help everyone dropped everything to help Nora with her face.
