Justice in Titus Andronicus

Titus threatened Saturnine's throne since he was so popular with the Roman people. Saturninus said, "No, Titus, no. The emperor needs her not, nor her, nor thee, nor any of thy stock." ( pg 15 line 302). Saturninus" decision not to marry Lavinia was not only an insult to Titus, but it made him angry.
The second day there was a hunt to celebrate the marriage of Saturninus to Tamora, and Bassianus to Lavinia. While Tamora, Lavinia, and Bassianus was walking through the woods, Demetrius and Chiron showed up and killed Bassianus. After they killed Bassianus, they took Lavinia and raped her. During these times in Rome, the laws about having sex before being married (including rape), were very strict. If a daughter was raped or committed adultery, then the father had the right to kill her. That's how much honor there was in keeping chastity for women. After they were finished raping Lavinia they cut off her tongue and her hands. Since Lavinia was raped, she was considered a shame to the Andronicus family. Titus knew that his family would be looked down on if people knew that his daughter was ravaged like she was. Saturninus said to Titus, "Because the girl should not survive her shame, and by her presence still renew his sorrows." (Pg 100 line 41). Seeing his daughter like this made him even more sad and even more angry. He wanted revenge for his daughter, but he didn't know who was to blame.
After Bassianus was thrown in the pit and Tamora left, Aaron left to get Titus" two sons. Quintus and Martius were walking in the forest with Aaron when Martius falls into the hidden pit that Bassianus was in. Aaron went to get help while the two brothers stayed behind. Martius started to get scared down in the pit by himself and Quintus couldn't reach to pull him out so he jumped into the pit with his brother to keep him company. When Aaron came back with Saturninus, Saturninus saw that his brother was dead in the pit and he thought that Quintus and Martius were the murderers.
