            The story the "Scarlet Ibis" is told from the first person point of view. The writer James Hurst tells the story through a narrator who is also Doodles brother. The narrator tells the story a few years after it has happened and what he remembers about the summer when his brother died. Hurst uses a narrator that was present during the event to tell the story so the events can be seen first hand like the reader was actually there. .
             A very broad theme for the "Balek Scales" is man is often cruel to his fellow man. Another theme that is incorporated into this story is appearances can be deceptive. These two themes show how even though the Baleks seem like nice people they are very cruel. They also show how the Balek Scales which stand for justice and honesty are wrong and cheat people out of money. These theme's are very broad and the theme, man is often cruel to his fellow man, is often used in twentieth century literary works. .
             The story, "Before the end of the summer" is about a boy named Bennie who overhears a doctor telling his grandmother that she is going to die before the end of the summer. There are many events that lead up to the end of the summer in which many times Bennie thinks it will be the end, but it doesn't happen until the very end of the summer which symbolizes the end of summer as some things ending and new ones beginning.
             The story, "A Summers Reading" is about a man named George who quit school and lives with his father and sister. One night while George is walking he bumps into Mr. Cattanzara who he tells he is going to read a hundred books during the summer. George keeps putting it off and becomes ashamed to face Mr. Cattanzara because of the reputation he built up for George. One day George finally decides to read and he goes to the library and counts out one hundred books to read. This symbolizes a kind of peer pressure because George was scared to face Mr.
