Islamic Luxury Art: Pen Box

There was a vast amount of found in Islamic culture. Of those, the many luxury pieces of art that emerged within the community show much about the Islamic society. Using and then adapting techniques for metal from the Romans and Byzantine, the Islamic made a metal work style of their own. Nowhere better than can this be seen than in the work of the Shazi. .
The Shazi is a pen box made out of brass with some silver and copper and is about a foot long and an inch wide. Shazi, the creator of this pen box, was an artist commanded by the chief minister of the early thirteenth century Majd al-Mulk al-Muzaffar. It is thought to have originated from either Persia or Afghanistan. It was the first known signed piece of Islamic art. Although the Shazi is elaborately designed, its basic function is simply that of a box to hold a pen. Interestingly, it was rare that work of such high quality was made of brass rather than a more expensive metal but because of a shortage of precious metals during the time at which it was made, brass was more prevalent. The functionality of the piece shows the great importance that Muslims placed on education. The ability to write was a sign of social status and only leaders would have a personalized pen box. The box is embossed with scrolls, human, and animal figures detailed with calligraphic inscriptions. One phrase refers to the owner as the "luminous star of Islam," an obvious way to complement the owner. Another verse asks for God to bless its owner. This shows the Islamic people placing high regard on how their God viewed them and their desire for His approval in life. .
The Shazi can be compared to Christian works that were common around the same time. One similarity seen that the detail found on the pen box were similar to those that would be found on many Christian works. The religious inscriptions on the pen box were also a resemblance. Messages about God and Jesus as well as religious scenes, were similar to how the pen box contains lyrics praising Majd al-Mulk al-Muzaffar.
