Koop think violence is a public health problem because it is. It's just as common as any other health issue. Like smallpox, tuberculosis and syphilis. If I were the Surgeon General, I would make the punishments for violent crimes more severe than they already are. It seems like people are getting away with unacceptable crimes. I also believe that people need to be more educated on different kinds of people. If kids grow up being more accepting and open-minded than hate crimes and violence won't happen.
I believe that domestic violence is one of the most disturbing forms of violence because it happens in the home. A child's house is supposed to be a safe haven for them. But if children, and adults, see the home as a scary and dreadful place, than that gives them a very negative attitude. I also think that the laws need to be strengthened for domestic violence as well. If any person commits a domestic crime, they need to be put in jail for life. The emotional scars from domestic violence last forever. Because it's almost impossible to stop domestic violence altogether, the Surgeon's General needs to alert parents of the warning signs. Most often, one parent is unaware that their spouse is doing anything to their child. Another important aspect of preventing domestic violence is to teach kids and adults to be open with everything. If kids feel comfortable talking to their parents, the violence can be stopped earlier.
