Beowulf and Hercules: Strong, Self-confident, and Stupid

At the age of eighteen he killed the Thespian lion without any assistance. Later, he conquered the vicious lion of Nemea, which no weapons could harm, with his bare hands. Additionally, he completed the twelve labors of Hercules, which included the capture of Cerberus (the three headed dog and guardian of the underworld) with his bare hands. (1c) Later, he subdued Antaeus (a giant who shingled his house with the skulls of his victims) to free a road; he defeated Achelous to win his wife; he conquered death to rescue Alcestis. Beowulf and Hercules were both powerful heroes who possessed great strength in their adventures.
Another characteristic that Beowulf and Hercules both possessed was a tremendous self-confidence. (3) Beowulf, for example, was very confident that he would defeat his foes: he pledged to fight without any weapons or warriors to help him. Before he fought the battle with Grendel he said, "I will crush the giant Grendel in single combat. and I deny myself the use of a sword and a broad yellow shield in battle; I shall grapple with this fiend hand to hand" ("Beowulf," 12). This shows his belief that he could defeat Grendel, even without any weapons or help. Beowulf also displayed his self-confidence by vowing to beat ma Grendel without any help or weapons. Furthermore, when Beowulf was an old man and had ruled his kingdom for over fifty years, he thought he was strong enough to beat the dragon that was plaguing his kingdom. In a similar manner, Hercules also often exhibited a tremendous self-confidence. "Throughout his life, he had a perfect self-confidence that no matter who was against him he could never be defeated" (Hamilton, 167). Besides believing that he could never be defeated Hercules also thought of himself on an equality with the gods (he had good reason to do so since he helped them defeat the giants). He exhibited this belief when tried to fight Apollo because Apollo's oracle wouldn't answer him.
