Willy Loman Has good qualities


            William Loman is one of the most famous and most discussed characters in modern American Literature. In Arthur Miller's classic Death of a Salesman Willy Loman is a traveling salesman who has worked for the Wagner Company for thirty-four years. Sixty-one years old tired and still working hard to support him and his wife, when he just makes enough to pay most of his bills. He was taken off of a salary job and was put back onto commission, making things harder for him and his family. Throughout the play Willy starts to loose his sanity with stress from work and the stress of his sons (who are unsure of themselves and what they want to do with life). All of this stress leads to the downfall of Willy and eventually, his unfortunate death. He is remembered as a man with much strength regardless of sanity. He loved his family and worked very hard for them, he is what we look at as a person trying to achieve the "American Dream."".
             Willy Loman is a middle-class man making a middle-class wage living in a middle-class society. He works an inhumanly amount of hours and drives a large amount of miles to pay for his bills and put food on the table. "My God, if business doesn't pick up I don't know what I'm gonna do- Willy says (pg36). Recently Willy was taken away from his salary job and worked strictly on commission. He stresses over the fact that he has to keep a very tight budget to be able to pay the bills. Always calculating every dollar that he makes and what cash is going out. Willy makes the money and Linda keeps the records. .
             Linda: Two hundred gross .
             Willy: What do we owe?.
             Linda: Well, on the first there's sixteen dollars on the refrigerator.
             Willy: Why Sixteen ? I hope we don't get stuck on that machine. (Pg.35-36) .
             Linda goes on about more expenses and Willy gets more upset as she shouts out the numbers. But after all is said and done he still ends the conversation with the words "Oh, I'll knock em dead next week.
