The Woods Hole Research Center's study shows that the Amazon forests are being destroyed at twice the rate as the Brazilian authorities first believed ("Amazon forest loss," 1999). "According to projections by a Penn State professor, Amazonian rainforests could reach a "point of no return" in as little as 10 to 15 years from now if deforestation continues at the present rate of about one- percent per year ("Loss of Amazon," 2001, p. 1)." One more indicator is that Nepstad's team found out that much of the logging deforestation and surface fires aren't calculated in the amount or rate of destruction, thus making the actual rate a lot worse than thought, considering these two particular types of destruction make up more than half of the total destroyed forest each year ("Amazon forest loss," 1999). .
The destruction of the forests, though, is caused by many different processes and for many different reasons. One cause for destruction is Brazil's intricate highways through the rainforest because these highways have opened up the interior for the wrong people, people who want the land for farming, ranching, logging, and mining. Another cause is the Brazilian government trying to show their support for development by selling hectares to large companies, wealthy farmers, and wealthy businessmen for twenty-five cents a hectare, which made it easy to by huge areas for real cheap costs ("Destruction of the," 2002). "Cattle ranching has been responsible for nearly eighty percent of the destruction to the rainforests ("Destruction of the," 2002, p. 1)." So often, logging companies do their fair share by clearing out huge areas of trees for maybe one valuable tree, the Brazilian Mahogany ("Destruction of the," 2002). "Gold rushes in Brazil sparked people to burn down areas of forest o make room for airfields, towns, and mining camps (Destruction of the," 2002, p. 2)." Other causes of deforestation of many hectares are mining operations and hydroelectric dams ("Destruction of the," 2002).
