Symbolism in literatur

In literature, sometimes it can be very usefull, maybe even necessary to use a good deal of symbolism to convey your message. In reading " Young Goodman .
Brown" by Nathanial Hawthorne, I find this to be particuarly true. It is easy to relate to this work becuase it focuses on an aspect of life that all mortals have, and will .
continue to face in there everyday actions. The battle to choose good over evil is not only enevitable, but nessacery. Hawthorne not only explores this topic, but also gives .
us good insite of the possible reprocussions of soch decisions. Never before has the language of symbolism been more evident, than in the title of the work itself, " Young .
             Goodman Brown ".
Only after reading the story, did it become obvious to me that the title and the name of main character were direct symbolisms of mankind. The title sugests that in .
the bigining -"young", everybody starts out good. I feel this is true because the name Goodman is more discriptive in character, than in individual distinction. The last name .
Brown is a common name in todays society and even moreso in the setting in which we find our lead character. I also find it very interisting that as Goodman Brown .
continues on his reluctant journey, his thoght's constantly return to his wife Faith. The name ' faith ' seems to relate not only to his wife, but also to his uncertainty of .
whome he is, and weather or not to continue with his journey. In the begining, faith is reluctant for him to go, yet he is steadfast saying " of all nights in the year, this one .
night must I tarry away from thee." The lines preceding this quote could be interperated as an argument he is having wiyh himself about his personal faith, followed by " .
Then God bless you" " and may you find all well, when you come back" which seems to be a sarcastic warning of what's to come. We then see the somewhat troubling .
reality of Goodman Brown justifying his actions as he discribes Faith as an angel on earth, whose skirt he will cling to as he follows her to heaven, " after this one night".
