The Costs of Being Thin

The pressures of looking great are taking their toll on teenage girls in America. Throughout early adolescence, children may be teased and harassed by other children if their weight is even slightly above average (Brownlee). These expectations can have a negative effect on self-esteem, focusing energy on dieting, drive for thinness, and body dissatisfaction in older adolescence ("Get Real"). Other social factors can play major roles in the continuing obsession with having that ideal body. Our society puts a great deal of pressure on the need to look thin and attractive, which can instill feelings of inadequacies if the person does not meet the criteria ("Get Real"). To add to the stress of avoiding the viscious cycle of eating disorders, obesity rates among young adults and children are at their highest now than ever before. This can be attributed in part to emphasis and dependency on fast food, which is usually very high in saturated fat and carbohydrates, and is the easiest type of food available when out and about. Fast food portions are also substantially larger than what is needed by our bodies daily.
Certain psychological factors can also be attributed to causing eating disorders. Binging and purging can be accredited to underlying personality problems, where these internal struggles bring about feelings of anxiety and uneasiness which then get "stuffed down" after episodes of binging and purging (Hawkins 57). There is also an emphasis placed in the past of a person affected with an eating disorder. The caregiver, specifically the mother, may be blamed for instilling confusion between the feelings of hunger and eating urges (58). For example, I have seen many parents use the "snack reward" trick for cheering up cranky kids. The mother or father see their child crying or throwing a tantrum and automatically reach for the bag of Oreos or box of Ho-Hos, in which they usually succeed in stifling their irascible youngster.
