Earth Studies by Sheenaugh Pugh

Earth Studies is set of 19 poems written by Sheenaugh Pugh. These poems are set in the future and they explore the abuse of earth by the humans that eventually cause them to leave earth. .
Out of the set of 19, I looked at 3 poems. They are the craft I left in was called Esau, Geography 1 and Do You Think We"ll Ever get to See the Earth, Sir? Although all 3 poems are different in terms of their structure the three poems carry the same theme. They are like a warning and a reminder to us about our present day. They remind us of how much we stand to lose if we continue to destroy the earth. They show how dark and dull our lives would be without the earth. .
The craft I left in was called Esau is a poem written in a diary form portraying the view of a passenger on board the craft that is leaving earth. The person describes the people on board the craft as being incongruously normal as though they do not fit in with the rest of the scene. The other people on board were acting with a very carefree attitude indicating that they were not worried about leaving earth. Upon reading the poem, the first question that seems to come to mind is why were these people leaving earth? What could have possibly happened that forced them to leave earth? The mood of the poem is so relaxed and calm that it is almost disturbing. These people were leaving earth and they were acting like they were just traveling from one country to another. The person in the poem remarked how she could not recall feeling at that time indicating that later on the full impact of leaving earth hit her. The purpose of the poem in to indicate that one day that could be us leaving earth carrying the same carefree attitude as we do today.
Geography 1 is a poem about the island of Surtsey. It is presented as a geography lessen to the children to teach them about earth. This poem shows how powerful the earth can be and the poet uses very powerful words such as terrific spray, angry energy and water heaved a side as the rock was thrown up.
