The novel, The Catcher In The Rye, is about a young man named Holden, who narrates the story of a short period in his life. It is a realistic novel which tells about modern day things from a boy's point of view. Since he is the narrator, he lets the reader know what he thinks, and not just what he does or says. Although written a few years back, many people of today can still relate to the story. .
Holden Caulfield is a 17 year old young man who tells the story of a couple days in his life at the age of 16. He has just been expelled from school, and he doesn't really know what he wants to do with his life. Holden has some thoughts about what he would like to do, but since he is only 16, he can't really do too much.
The main character is Holden Caulfield. Holden is 16 years old and has a tendency to act immature. He views the world in a childish, immature way. He refers to people as phonies and other negative terms, which shows that he is in fact childlike. Robert Ackley is another character in the story. He is Holden's neighbor; he lives in the dorm next door. Robert pretends to be macho, but he is actually a sensitive guy. Which is what most sensitive guys do, act tough. Stradler is Holden's roommate. He is popular with both girls and guys. But at the same time he refers to girls as being less than he or other guys. Sally Hayes is another important character in the novel. She is one of Holden's good friends. Sally is also a teenager. But unlike Holden, she is mature and responsible. Phoebe Caulfield is Holden's sister. Although only 10 years old she is also mature for her age. Phoebe acts like she is older than she really is. She watches out for Holden and by her actions, Phoebe shows that she really cares about him. Mr. Antoli is an old teacher of Holden's, he and his wife, Mrs. Antolini, take in Holden one night while he has nowhere to stay. Holden ends up leaving because even though they are very nice people, he wasn't too comfortable by the way Mr.
