Response to Les Miserables

"A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is Still A Wolf," and "We are all naturally law abiders or law breakers." Upon watching the movie, Les Miserables the viewer is able to see that these are a few of Inspector Javiert's theories on human nature. In other words, he believes that people don't change and once a convict, always a convict. Although Javiert was known to stand by every law throughout the story, he seems to go through a type of transformation in which he ends up playing the opposite role as a law breaker. .
I feel that everybody should receive a second chance and yes, people can change. With a little bit of hope, time, and understanding, I believe that even the worst of criminals can be altered. Val jean had grown up learning to hate the world because all he felt from everyone was hatred. Punished for stealing food, he was imprisoned for 19 years and robbed of his name. The world he knew was a world without forgiveness, and he fell into a state of hopelessness. After a state of release, freedom soon showed itself to be meaningless when the world he was released into proved to be another prison, no kinder than the jail he had left. When shown true compassion by a bishop, Val jean met the kindness with sarcasm. He pretended to be grateful then stole silverware for his own profit from the old man. Unkind and heartless is how Jean Val jean acted towards people in the beginning, but with some compassion shown from the bishop, he gradually changes. .
Val jean couldn't understand why the bishop had once again shown kindness even after he stole from his very church. He saved Val jean from going back to the dreadful prison he once lived in. Through this gift, Val jean was offered redemption and saw another way of living. He couldn't escape it; the life of the criminal Jean Val jean had to end. He cast aside his past (along with his yellow parole card) to begin his new life as a changed man. As Val jean tries to move on with his life, he encounters another setback.
