The Six Day War took place on June 5, 1967 when Israel launched an attack on Egypt, Syria and Jordan. Israel had little choice and their attack was inevitable. Things started off when Egyptian President Gamal Nasser forced the United Nations, which was used as an international safety gate for Israel, to remove itself from the Sinai Peninsula.
The Arabs continuously made threats against Israel throughout the month of May. Nasser began to prepare his country and army for what he thought would be the destruction and abolishment of Israel undoubtedly. On June 4, Iraq joined Nasser's military alliance against Israel. The president of Iraq stated that this was his chance to finally wipe out Israel, their enemy since 1948. Nasser set up all the armies of his alliance along all the borders of Israel. It was clear that he was ready and prepared for war. Little did he know just how it would turn out.
Over the past month, Israel knew what was coming for them. They were not about to sit back and wait for the end of their nation. The Israeli's worked hard to strengthen the IAF (Israel Air Force). They paid close attention to the armor and air power in particular.
The Israeli retaliation began on June 5 when the IAF's aircraft took off and attacked the Egyptian air force bases. In less than 2 hours, roughly 300 Egyptian bombers, combat planes and helicopters were obliterated. After 6 days, the Arab nations surrendered. Many Arab lives were lost and the Jordanian, Sinai and Egyptian capitals were threatened. The Arabs had no other choice. The Israeli's had defeated them. .
The Six Day War was one of the most interesting and important wars between the Israel and Arab nations. The war was an embarrassment to the Arabs, and resulted in many years of suffering and recovery. The Arab people went through many changes in the years that followed and the tension that existed between Israel and the Arab countries increased immensely.
