            John Steinbeck enables crucial techniques that consume the reader into a far-fetched but classical novel, that experiments cultures and human relationships. "Tortilla Flat" reveals the true story of the Paisano culture and their reliance on wine. Throughout this novel wine exemplifies a change in the course of reality and a way to evade responsibility. The following paper will prove the fact that wine plays a fundamental role in the development of the characters both physically and mentally. .
             The characters personality and comradeship may be described as an opportunistic, manipulative and incomprehensible one, because of their state of mind and approach to diverse circumstances throughout the novel. Characters certainly depend on each other, but encompass an endless conflict caused by their nature and prominently, by wine. I believe that wine is the object responsible for vanishing all courageous intentions present towards one another, thus it is what transforms them into selfish and weak individuals. Wine is the approach to eradicate responsibility, for example when Pablo says: "If all the dew were diamonds, We would be very rich. We would be drunk all our lives" (pg.27). Previously is portrayed the classic Paisano society and their habit of consuming wine to avoid of the real situation in which they live in. In other words they subsist in a surreal atmosphere, in which vital life aspects are transformed with a humorous perspective. .
             Wine is what disturbs serenity. Characters have fine intentions but as they proceed to act, wine becomes a pathway and a connection between the true spirit and their conscience. Their inner instinct is what makes them adjust their life to an effortless item such as wine. An isolation between the real world and the nature of the individuals is created once they formulate an idea but are incapable of accomplishing it, because of their dependency on wine. Their story revolves on a continuous dream breakage.
