Integrating Theological Themes

Luther and Paul's grounds on free will are contradictory. Luther believes that we do not co-operate with our justification. We have no free will in choosing to accept or to reject the gift of grace from God. For God chose to give us God's grace accomplishing redemption. Paul on the contrary believes that the human person may reject the faith given to them. His belief allows the option of free will into the human ability. Since, we are driven innately from God's grace in choosing sin over faith, and so before becoming good humans must accept faith. The Council of Trent supports the option of free will on Paul's account.
God touches a person's heart through the light of the holy Spirit, neither does that person do absolutely nothing in receiving that movement of grace, for he can also reject it; nor is he able, by his own freewill and without God's grace; to move himself towards justice in God's sight. (Trent, 114).
This text clearly states that humans receive grace from God. Humans with this grace have the free will to either move from it, or let the gift of grace to flow freely from one's self. The stance on freedom of will by the Council of Trent and Paul remind humans of their chose in faith. .
The gift of grace is possessed by humanity in different ways with these two contradicting views. Luther's view of grace is that it accomplishes humanity's redemption. By grace, Luther believes that humanity is saved alone by God's gift, because faith is derived from grace. Before humans can begin to have faith, faith must have been given to them and they rely upon it for justification. For the inner human "needs only the Word of God for it life and righteousness, so it is justified by faith alone. (Luther, 9)" believes that grace is also a gift from God. However, has a two-fold meaning in Catholic beliefs. Grace in a predisposed manner is a gift of faith to humanity decided by God. This is how humans can be justified in the eyes of God.
