Macdonaldization

McDonaldization seems to be the general idea in society today according to Ritzer. He seemed to key in strongly on the idea of rationalization that our society today is generally run on effrey, predatory, calculability or quantity rather then qualtiy as well as substitution of non human technology and control. Every aspect of how we live has every component of being run like a McDonalds. The food we eat, the church we attend, activities we do, doctors, work and etc. We were born into a society and indoctrinated to expect things a certain way. We expect efficiency in the everyday things we do or want to accomplish. Most Americans are on a very busy schedule and need to go from point A to B without any obstructions. This is where the efficiency of fast food enters our lives. There is a basic menu to choose from with few choices and the convenience of the drive through window so we can continue on our way. It has become an expectation instead of a means. We also expect predictability in our lives. When we go from one place to another we want to know what to expect. We don't like surprises, we like for things to remain the same. The example given of home cooked meals is a perfect one. When you have a dinner invitation to someone's home you don't know what type of food you will be served or if it will be to your liking. However if the person say's I"m ordering pizza for dinner, you then know what to expect and you can let them know what you like. It is normal to have unexpected things happen, but because what we are up against it seems that we prefer quantity rather the quality. I strongly agree with this. The book gave a great example of colleges. They place the emphasis on grades and not the material or the knowledge that we gain. We are measured on testing and not on knowledge. I really dislike this because I could not pass a multiple-choice test if my life depended on it. I do however understand the information and can apply it to life.
