Hiroshima

It was unusually hot in Hiroshima on this late summer morning in 1945. People busily rushed through the streets, all starting their daily agendas around the same time. There were few people who took time out of their busy schedules to relax for a bit and look at the new morning sky. It would be these people, and these people only who would notice the three foreign aircraft flying mysteriously high above their city. And it would be only the people who were captivated enough, or even those who had the time, to notice the underbelly of one open and release an object resembling a cigar, and let it plunge towards the city like some unwanted gift. It would only be a short 43 seconds later that the citizens of Hiroshima would get to have their present - the four ton present. 43 seconds after its release, the worlds first atomic bomb exploded over the city with an unseen brilliance, followed instantly by a blast of cyclonic fury. People, including children, were instantly vaporized only to leave behind a heap of carbon. Everything within a mile radius was completely demolished by this treacherous blast. On August 6, 1945, at the cost of over 100,000 lives, the concept of nuclear war was introduced.
Hiroshima was the first city ever to be devastated by an atomic bomb. The atomic blast on August 6, 1945, resulted in 135 000 casualties and almost completely destroyed the city, which lies on six small islands in the Ota river delta. Over 80 bridges link the separate parts of the city, and railroads and highways connect Hiroshima with other cities on Honshu, Japan's main island. The city was founded as a military fortress in 1594, and it grew rapidly to become a commercial and industrial center in Japan. More importantly, it was a major center for the manufacture of war materials before and during World War II.
The underlying cause of the decision to go ahead with the bombing of Hiroshima could probably be dated back to December 7, 1941.
