burning infero

She wrote poetry concerning classical subjects and everyday Puritan life, but later in life she started writing about her hardships and struggles. For instance, some things she wrote about were losing her grandchild and the burning of her house. Unlike Rowlandson, Bradstreet wrote about how she ought to feel in her poems, rather than how she actually felt. She sacrificed her true feelings on certain subjects just to please her readers in fear that she might offend them. As an example of controversial issues that caused commotion, gender is one of those major issues. Bradstreet's narrative also agrees with Rowlandson's idea of "the will of God for her life" (176). .
In Rowlandson's narrative, she says, "At length they came and beset our own house, and quickly it was the dolefullest day that ever my eyes saw" (217). Yet throughout the chaos and killing rampage, she always turned to God, and saw hope in a situation that seemed completely hopeless and unbearable. Mary Rowlandson relied on her faith in the providence of God to sustain herself during her period of captivity. For example, instead of all of them being killed, twenty four lives were spared. The true belief of a Puritan is that they are the "Chosen people of God", therefore being the "chosen ones" or at least believing they are, it will make them better people. This means God will always protect them if they abide by the rules. Thus, Rowlandson revealed her belief that God would act against other people simply because they were enemies to the Puritans. Rowlandson believed that the sins of the colonists, which deviated from their covenant with God, led God to use the Indians as a means for punishment. The Puritans credit the destruction not to the Indians, but to God. "Come, behold the works of the Lord, what dissolations he has made in the Earth" (218). In this rampage, their houses were burned and members of their families murdered or rather "knocked in the head.
