Lockheed Martin is a global enterprise principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products, and services for government and commercial customers. Lockheed Martin has many lines of business, dealing mostly with aircrafts and defense systems. They design and produce combat aircrafts, naval electronics, government satellites, tactical missiles, naval surveillance systems, space launch vehicles, air defense systems and missile defense systems. The Lockheed Martin Corporation Makes over $25 billion a year and employs approximately 130,000 people. Its two major competitors are Boeing and General Dynamics. Two companies dealing with basically the same businesses as Lockheed Martin.
Lockheed Martin is a merged company that was formed in March of 1995 when two of the worlds largest technology companies Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta Corporation combined. And in 1996, Lockheed Martin then combined with the defense electronics and systems intergration businesses of Loral.
Lockheed Martins roots date back to 1909 when aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin organized a company constructing airplanes for U.S. military and commercial customers. In 1961 the Glenn L. Martin Company merged with American-Marietta Corp, which was a leading supplier of building and road construction materials.
Allan and Malcolm Loughhead, which later was changed to Lockheed, began in 1913. Lockheed was the first company to put a plane in flight over the San Francisco Bay. In 1932 the airplane company known as Lockheed was reorganized to be the modern day corporation it is today.
Loral Corporation was founded in 1948 in New York City. It was a small defense electronics firm that grew into a billion dollar firm. As of now the Lockheed Martin Corporation comprises all or portions of 17 different companies.
