.
Another comparison that existed between the two was the criticizing of the current President, whose spot they were trying to take. Both said that Johnson was doing two things that were hurting America. First he was spending too much money on his plan to help America and wasn't doing enough to try and bring the conflict in Vietnam. While the two candidates, Nixon and Wallace had different beliefs of how to end the war, one being to simply win it and the other to start withdrawing troops. .
Finally, the last difference between the two was the way that they felt about the war, which was previously mentioned in the last paragraph. Nixon, felt that the war should be ended by turning over most of the fighting to the troops in Vietnam and start withdrawing troops more gradually. Wallace, on the other hand called for a victory in Vietnam, this would be important and split the votes. He would also loose more votes when he decided on his vice president mate, Cutis Lemay, who made a statement saying that the war could be ended by dropping nuclear bombs on Vietnam.
McCarthy vs. Humphrey.
McCarthy would become a strong runner during the beginning of the campaign and then would start to fold over during the end of the election. McCarthy at times would be seven points ahead of Nixon, the leader most of the time in the race. McCarthy would start to gain more and more ground after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. endorsed McCarthy. .
During the election race, McCarthy would be most concerned with the war in Vietnam, calling it illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional. McCarthy called for an end to the war. However, after King endorsed the McCarthy campaign he would now have to pick up support and take a stand for peace and civil rights. This could only help his campaign more by calling for peace in Vietnam and at home, while also calling that civil rights must be acknowledged in America. .
From what can be told, McCarthy admitted to running a very relaxed campaign and only hitting on the two key issues, the war and civil rights.
