As I was brainstorming for this particular essay I simultaneously was reading a fashion magazine , in which an advertisement appeared with a women who had a before and after pictures of Botox injections. I began to ponder about the impact that particular advertisement had on myself and on society. I asked myself, "Are we as society saying it is okay to impede aging? Are we popularizing this notion that getting older is not good and youth is?- I became rather immersed in the quest to find the answers to my questions as I was reading one of my favorite poets, Sylvia Plath. I stumbled upon "Mirror- and became rather interested because the poem possessed congruence to my questions. I think that the poem has to do with a woman who is yearning for a better way of life. She see something in the mirror that is distasteful to her and she wishes that she could change it. The woman is getting old and it is hard for her to face. I think that there is a theme about the truth. The woman in the poem does not like the truth and she tries to hide from it, even though it still finds her. I think it also possible to see the poem as a reflection on the importance of appearance to women in our culture.

The eye of the little god, four cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall. .
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long.
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,.
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
