scarlet letter

The true villain in The Scarlet Letter would be Roger Chillingworth. Throughout the whole book, Chillingworth was portrayed as an evil, bitter man obsessed with revenge. He existed as an entity of evil, planning the destruction of Rev. Arthur Dimmsdale, because of the sin committed by Dimmsdale and Chillingworth's wife, Hester Prynne. As his name indicated, Chillingworth was a man who was incapable of human compassion. His soul, mirroring his appearance, was just as distorted, twisted, and evil. .
Roger Chillingworth first came in the book, during Hester's sentence on the scaffold. He revealed himself to no one but Hester, whom he makes swear to secrecy. Chillingworth had married Hester in England. He was much older than her when they married. In their earlier years, as it's stated in the book, Chillingworth was a difficult husband. He ignored Hester half the time because he was busy with his books. When he did have time for her, he expected her to fulfill and nourish his soul with affection. He sent her to America, while he took care of his own affairs in Europe. He returned after a while trying to claim what was his. When he discovered his wife and her illegitimate child on the scaffold, he immediately planned his revenge by taking on a fake name and diving into society by taking the role of doctor or "leech." He becomes two-faced like the devil, intent on getting revenge on the man who impregnated his wife in sin. .
Chillingworth chose to be the town's leech because of his expertise and what he learned when the Native Americans held him captive. He became the town's leech to feed on the vitality of others. Chillingworth made a name for himself as a good leech in town and everyone praised him. The leech was just a mask he wore, trying to root out Hester's secret lover and Pearl's father. When Hester visited the governor to inquire if the rumors were true of the removal of Pearl from Hester's custody, Chillingworth spoke against the child and prompted the men present to take pearl away.
