             During these times religion was very important during the Middle Ages. Everyone was expected to attend church regularly and to pay taxes to the church. Priests were usualy considered to be most knowledgable and were looked upon for explanations for those things that were difficult to understand. .
             After the Plague.
             After many years, the epidemic finally ended and living standards had changed dramatically. Immense effects could be seen in culture, religion, and economics. .
             In art the changes were extreme. During pre-plague times nobles and lords were often depicted in good health, in their best clothes and armour, holding swords. After the plague hit half decomposed bodies with parts of the skeleton clearly visible were shown. The clothes draping the body were old and flesh was shown rotting often times with worms and snails; suffering seemed to prevail as a new theme for art. Churches, monarchs and lords are said to have requested this type of art for their display. .
             Literature as a result of the plague became darker and somber. Architecture suffered greatly because many of the profession lost their lives to the disease, leaving European architecture in the hands of amateurs. European architecture changed from high style to clean cut and simple. The mortality rate of the well educated was great. The areas where universities were built were usually the most affected by the plague. Soon some 30 existing universities were all closed and abandoned, dropping education standards incredibly low. .
             Economically, construction projects were stopped or even abandoned because guilds lost their craftsmen. Also, those capable of repairing important machinery were lost to the plague. Labor shortages were abundant and because of this to advertise for specialists at high wages.
