1619

The Jamestown colony was first established in 1607. The colony was controlled by the British. The king was in charge of the colony but it was difficult for him to control the colony due to the great distance between the New World and the New World. The king would appoint a governor to oversee the colony. Underneath the governor, there was a council and an elected assembly. The first ever elected assembly, which was called the House of Burgesses, was established in 1619. This was an example of a representative democracy and planted the seed for a democracy in the future. Many of the settlers in the colonies were looking to become rich without doing much work. In 1619, the same year that a democracy was beginning, the first slave ship landed in the New World. The slaves would be used to do the laborious work that the settlers didn't want to do. .
Both the arrival of slaves and the establishment of the House of Burgesses were important events of the year of 1916. A government was forming that's whole foundation was made by giving people a voice in government while at the same time people were being forced to work in grueling conditions so that a certain few people would become rich. The democracy that was forming would have to deal with the issue of slavery and democracy eventually. The bringing of slaves to the New World was to have a major impact on the history of the United States for the next 250 years. The two of these issues would eventually cause problems and would be one of the main reasons for the Civil War.
