subjectivity in as I lay dying

.
Another instance of the narrator's subjective view comes when Dewey Dell encounters Vardaman in the milking shed. ""You durn little sneak!" My hands shake him hard "I ain't done nothing""(62). The two characters in this dialogue are so concerned with their own innocence that they become confused about what is actually happening. Dewey Dell becomes angry because she believes originally that Vardaman is Lafe, and when she discovers that he is not, she thinks that Vardaman must have been spying on her. Vardaman reacts to this with fear because he is afraid that Dewey Dell will "tell him off" for attacking Peabody's team. Neither of the characters in this scene are able to fully understand the situation, and this makes it nearly impossible for the reader to form any kind of objective view about is happening during this time period. Both of these examples have clouded viewpoints that contribute to the overall subjectivity of this novel.
The language in this novel plays a very important role. Because of the different usage of words by characters it is difficult to attain an objective depiction of many of the events. The language in the novel is often unreliable because of the different connotations of words and the variety of meanings that they portray. As Addie Bundren states, "But then I realised I had been tricked by words, older than Anse or love, and that the same word had tricked Anse too"(173). She obviously has misgivings about the validity and dependability of words. She had believed that the word love meant one things, but when she became pregnant with Darl, she decided that she had been deceived and that the word denotes something else entirely. "I knew that that word [love] was like the others: just a shape to fill a lack"(172). Addie seems to believe that experiences people have cannot be described by mere words and that people who make up words like motherhood, fear, pride and love had never actually experienced any of these things.
