A Step Towards Enlightenment

Psychologists over the generations have regarded character as one of the greatest mysteries of human nature. According to James Hillman, founder of archetypal psychology, discusses the issue of character in his bestseller "The Soul's Code." He, like many other psychologists, stresses on the need for human beings to understand the strengths and weaknesses of our character. A better understanding of ourselves also gives us a better idea of how we are perceived by other people which leads to better public relationships, which Charles Schwab considered the most valuable skill he possessed. Many psychologists claim to be a cornerstone of our relationship with other people. Arturo Rotor, the protagonist in this selection, faces such a dilemma during his years at the medical school. In this paper, I would be discussing the factors that lead to his confusion as well as events that increase his knowledge about himself. Not only is he confused about his character, but he is also unaware and uncomfortable with his perception in the minds of others. .

Communication is a two-way street and Arturo Robert fails to realize that. His cynical character and a mistrust of the intentions of other people further aggravate his predicament. For example, when he is offered by a friend to relieve him for a couple of hours, he refuses on the grounds that "generosity must be repaid with generosity." .

Arturo's cynical approach to life is predictably accompanied with a caustic sense of humor. Unfortunately, lack of good communication skills as well as confidence leads to his humor not being understood by others, and thus often making him an object of ridicule. Being an introvert, Arturo patiently tolerates the insults. However, in private, he strongly resents it. Clouded by a feeling of helplessness, Arturo's self-esteem is and remains rock bottom throughout most of the selection. Persons with low self-esteem need company so as to avoid getting depressed.
