The fight for civil rights is a never-ending and much needed struggle. Without this movement, the majority of the population will remain ignorant to and blissfully unaware of the undue injustices of the minorities. Until we all become blind to the color of one's skin, sex, or one's sexual orientation the majority will continue to dictate our society. African Americans will continue to be prevented from obtaining high paying corporate jobs, women will persistently be portrayed as nothing more than sex toys or house wives, and gays and lesbians will still be prohibited from obtaining a legal marriage license. .
It is the year 2002, and our nation has yet to produce a black president. We have yet to see an African American on the moon, or even a black pro hockey coach. The presidents and CEOs of today's top businesses and companies - Walmart, Staples, Microsoft, Exxon, and others, all have one thing in common. Each and every one is white. African Americans must still struggle for a respected place in today's workforce. .
Not only must African Americans fight for respect and rights in society, but women as well. Images of submissive, obedient, and unintelligent females are plastered everywhere from billboards to newspapers to television and movie screens, making them seem like nothing more than "housewives" or "sex slaves" and giving the remainder of the population the delusion that the female gender is inferior and incapable of making anything more of themselves. Hence, females, like African Americans, are still deprived of equality in the office. A highly qualified woman continues to make 25 cents less per dollar than an equally qualified man. .
Among the most severe injustices is the cruel exclusion of gay and lesbian marriage. Thomas Jefferson states in the Declaration of Independence that every person is entitled to the "unalienable" rights of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
