Another character in the novel seen as "good- is Simon. Simon comes from the Hebrew for "listener- and was one of the apostles, Simon Peter. These direct hints at the spiritual meaning of his name come through in the role he plays in the novel. Simon is the only character in the novel to have a grasp on the bigger picture of what goes on. He is described by Golding as a skinny little boy with black hair and is slightly younger than Ralph is. At first, he does not seem to be a very likable character, as he acts odd in some instances due to his epilepsy. The boys do not become friends with him, even though he is the only one to help Ralph build shelters. Because of this, Simon often goes off by himself into the woods to think. It is here, in his place, that Simon makes the connection that the evil in the world is within one's self. Simon tries to communicate this idea to the boys, who are in utter fear of what they believe to be a beast. Despite his saint-like actions, Simon is killed by the boys when they think that he is the beast. The last main character in the novel seen as "good- is Piggy. Piggy is a heavyset boy with asthma and bad sight. The meaning of his name is very apparent as pigs are very common in the novel and killed by the boys in the same way they end up killing Piggy. Like Simon, Piggy is smarter than the other boys and because he too is often on the receiving end of cruelty and criticism, has a chance to think about things by himself. Unlike Simon, Piggy is much louder and makes his voice heard as often as possible. Ralph actually befriends Piggy and often takes his advice. Piggy thinks as an adult would think and because of that and his disabilities is ignored for the most part. Once Piggy dies and the conch shatters, all shreds of civilization disappear from the island. Ralph, Simon, and Piggy are all characters in the novel that are seen by readers as "good- and help communicate the themes that Golding tries to show in the novel.
