satiric techniques of gulliver

Like the Lilliputians had to deal with the arrival of Gulliver, the Europeans had to deal with the arrival of Americans. The Lilliputians miniature stature can directly relate to the exact cultural differences in which the Europeans had to face. Through this example, Swift ridicules physical size and its importance. The second example of satire in this strange land ridicules humanity. The Lilliputians actually believe they can control Gulliver. With Gulliver's arrival, the Lilliputians tie him up. The miniature people act as if they have a dominant power over Gulliver, when in fact Gulliver could easily destroy them. The Lilliputians also search and seize Gulliver's possessions. The serious tone of this act enhances the ridicule of these people who take themselves too seriously. With this inventory, the Lilliputians draw up a document he must sign to gain his freedom which represents nothing but a meaningless piece of paper. With the actions of the Lilliputians, Swift satirizes humanity's pretensions and significance. As Gulliver gains his freedom among the Lilliputians, he comes to learn of the history of Lilliput. Swift ridicules their conflict with the nearby country of Blefuscu. The conflicts arose among the disagreement over the proper way to crack an egg. This entire conflict completely parallels European history. The two opposing sides in the Lilliputian's conflict correspond to the Tory and Whig party of English politics. The Lilliputians represent the Whig party of England, whose accusations against the members of the Tory party Swift despises. As Lilliput goes to war with Blefuscu over the ridiculous egg conflict, the warfare between the Catholics and Protestants also faces ridicule. The meaningless and arbitrary wars between the Big-Endians and Little-Endians directly represent Swift's opinion toward the Protestant and Catholic's wars. They can both face mockery due to their stupidity.
