Hazing

These pranks were actually inflicted on a dozen sophomore girls from Northern Highlands Regional High School, which serves home to such towns as Allendale and Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. The so-called hazes were seniors on a team that had won the Bergen County field Hockey Championship for the past three years. Some of these senior girls were thought to be successful candidates for college scholarships. One of the most interesting facts about this story is the variety of different responses from the public and the actions that were taken by the school. When Northern Highlands school officials learned of these rituals, they kicked 14 seniors off the team. School administrators later discovered something about their community they never would have imagined. According to Allan, this was quoted from a Northern Highlands student: "I'm not shocked that this took place, nor should you be or make such a big deal about it. Hazing in high school is nothing new. The rest of the world has moved on. This country is so politically correct that people can't have some old-fashioned fun- (1). From another student: "Our society has to relax a little. Those sophomore girls have to suck it up and understand that they will gain respect for each other and become closer as a team. Sometimes hazing can be beneficial- (Allan 2). From a parent of one of the 14 seniors: "The hazing was harmless camp fun- (Allan 2). At school, some students now wear "Support Our Seniors- T-shirts. Several parents of the seniors have hired a lawyer to challenge Northern Highlands and allow their daughters to return to the team. Kicking teammates off from the team because of hazing other teammates was not the solution to solving this problem. The school administrator needs to consider other actions to deal with hazing. For example, this type of hazing, where it becomes so bad, humiliates the students, the school should have options.
