Special Weapons And Tactics Te

With only a five-man team it may become necessary in certain situations to utilize patrolmen with some instruction by the SWAT team. Some departments have increased their teams to as many as ten or eleven men to avoid the need to use under trained patrolmen. .
The basic five-man SWAT team consists of a team leader, scout, backup, marksman, and gasman. The team leader is generally a sergeant who is responsible for the supervision of the team and directing their deployment. The team leader must be familiar with all of the positions in the team in order to properly utilize their abilities. The scout is responsible for obtaining reconnaissance on the location and surroundings in order to develop intelligence to create a tactical plan. The scout must be familiar with all of the other positions in order to suggest positions for the other team members and to escort them to these locations during deployment. Backup is a position that has many capabilities depending on the circumstances. The main duty of the backup man is to assist and protect the scout during his reconnaissance duties. Backup must also be familiar with all the positions in the case that a man is lost during the conflict. Marksmen are equipped with a high power, scoped rifle. The Marksman is the preferred shooter when it is necessary. This is because of the marksman's position and the accuracy of his weapon. During an intervention, the marksman provides cover for the entry team (http://www.geocities.com/tazcou1/english/sniper.htm). The role of the gasman is to deploy selected chemical agents upon the request of the team leader (Kolman 12-15). .
The larger SWAT teams generally have a SWAT commander who is usually a lieutenant. The SWAT commander's role is to act as advisor and liaison between the team and the Operations Commander. This duty relieves a large amount of pressure from the team leader on the field. He is responsible for the team's activities and must approve the plan before it is implemented (Kolman 11).
