The taming of the shrew

" We can see from this quote that Petruchio is not used to wooing for what he wants, he simply demands it. Katherina later foundout that she had no say in the matter because her father has already agreed on a contract between himself and Petruchio, up on Baptista's passing Petruchio will gain, "[o]ne half of [his] lands and, in possession, twenty thousand crowns." We can now clearly see that Peturchio's only reason for marrying Katherina is for the money and land that he stands to inherit up on her father's death for at that time wealth is everything. The greater one's wealth, the more respected you are, much like today.
Hortensio is a wealthy resident of Padua. He is one of the suitors to Bianca, the youngest daughter of Baptista. Apart from himself there are two other rivals, Lucentio and Gremio. These three suitors were kept from wooing Bianca because Baptista will not allow his youngest to marry before his eldest. So, because of this, Hortensio decided to work with Gremio to find Katherina a husband than try and win Bianca's hand. However, his plan did not turn out the way that he had hoped because Bianca will not acknowledge him. Therefore, Hortensio decided to renounce Bianca and try his hand with a wealthy widow that he claims to have "long lov"d [him]." Hortensio seems to be a character that wants to be loved badly by someone, for he seems to be very lonesome. He figures that by marrying the rich widow that already loves him, not only will he be loved by someone but also he will have more wealth than he has right now. In modern terms he's "killing two birds with one stone.".
Lucentio is the son on a very wealthy merchant, Vencentio, whom lives in Pisa. Lucentio came to Padua to study philosophy, however he did not make it to the school because on the street he and his servant Tranio spooted Bianca. Right there and than Lucentio stated that he has fallen madly in love with Bianca.
