depression

While boys gain more positive feelings about their bodies through adolescence, girls" negative perceptions of body weight increase. (Siegal, 2002). "Negative self-image is reported to be present in 79% of the depressed adolescents" (Masi, Sbrana, Poli, Tomaiulo, Favilla & Marcheschi, 2000). Females face more discrimination than males along with these negative body/self images. While males are often taught to keep their feelings to themselves in fear of looking "weak", girls are known to dwell in their unhappy mood and to magnify it for all to see. If these young girls could find a way to feel better about themselves and their bodies, they would be less critical of themselves and in turn engage in a more pleasant transition into adulthood. With todays societal pressures to be thin, even at a young age it is hard to discard. .
Adolescents who are depressed have shown, but do not always exhibit inferior peer relations. They often consider themselves to be unpopular and disliked. When compared to nondepressed teens, they scored worse on levels of well-being and happiness, but did not differ when it came to anger. Less time exercising and doing homework along with overall grade point average was lower in depressed adolescents .
             ( Diego, Sanders, & Field, 2001).
According to Aydin (2001), the family is an extremely important environmental influence on personality development. Those who receive less family support have reported higher levels of depression and work related stress (Mithcell, 1983). It is also noted that overprotective and or uncaring parents have been linked to depression and suicidal thoughts (Blatt, 1979). Research by (Diego, Sanders & Field, 2001) show that verbal intimacy and physical affection towards parents were both low in depressed adolescence. At this uneasy time in everyone's lives, it is sometimes difficult to detach from our comfortable family atmosphere and search for our individuality.
