Methods used by Agrippina

Suetonius implies that Agrippina seduced Claudius, as her privilege to caress him had a "noticeable effect on his passions the wedding took place without delay." This statement implies that Agrippina used seduction to convice Claudius to marry her. However, this was not the first time that she had resorted to this tactic. Various sources all state that Agrippina used seduction as a means of influencing men and by this, gaining greater power and authority. It is believed that Agrippina carefully chose who she would sleep with so that each would have some political benefit for her. Sextus Afranius Burrus was an example of such, where Agrippina slept with him so as to gain his favour, and thus gain the favour of the Praetorian Guard. This method allowed Agrippina the chance to used her natural feminine charms to influence men to do as she desired and thus to help elevate her power and authority.
Thirdly, Agrippina also used marriage and assassination as methods of gaining power and political influence. This can be shown in her second marriage to C Sallustius Passienus Crispus. When he died in 46 AD, he left his inheritance to Agrippina and Nero, thus making them even more wealthy. This marriage can be seen to have been souly for the purpose of gaining wealth and elevating her personal status. This Tactic of using marriage to gain power and influence can be seen most strongly in Agrippina's marriage to Emperor Claudius in 49 AD. Through this marriage, Agrippina had almost direct control over the empire and at the same time, set her son Nero up to be the next emperor. "As soon as Agrippina had come to live in the palace she gained complete control over Claudius. Indeed, she as very clever in making the most of her opportunities and partly by fear and partly by favours, she won the devotion of all those who were at the friendly toward him. She accomplished there end partly by getting the freed men to persuade Claudius and by arranging before hand that the senate, the populace and the soldier should join together in shouting their approval of her demands on every occasion.
