a complaining slave

The New World isn't what I expected it to be. I came from a loving, successful family from Guinea, Africa to a greedy country considered to be the "perfect world." Why did I have to voyage across the ocean to work in the fields? Why did I have to leave my family behind? Why do I have to suffer through starvation, beatings, and unwanted ness? .
Life on the plantation farm isn't what it's all caught up to be. I get up at the break of dawn, work all day with the hot, throbbing sun beating on my back, and I go to bed whenever the master allows me too. I am not allowed to talk, sing, or make eye contact with anyone. I am lucky my master allows me to breathe! My master gives us grub from left over meals about once a week, if we are lucky of course.
With about 30 other slaves working on the plantation, you can only imagine the hardships we go through in order to survive from day to day. Diseases play a high factor in deaths and illnesses among us because we aren't given any protection from them. Our young children continue to die from starvation, and our elderly have been suffering tremendously from being over worked. .
It's a pity to think we have to live almost the rest of our lives like this. We aren't able to be with families. I am never going to be able to see my beautiful children, my loving husband, or the promising lands I once lived on. What did I, and all these other African Americans, do to deserve this kind of punishment? We didn't break any laws or commit any crimes; we just lived our daily lives as they should have been lived.
This is now my life until I die. It's sad to think I once had a family, a home, and a dream of living a long and successful life. Everything went downhill in a matter of a day, and the only thing I can do now is to live my life one day at a time. .
