I have already had some opportunities to look at women's circumstances in Japan by taking History 233-Modern East Asian History with Dr. B. Keenan. I did a research project on Japanese women's issues after World War II. My main goal on that project was to figure out the ways in which women started to get involved into Japanese labor force after World War II. While researching on the project, I had a chance to closer look at women's issues in Japan and I believe this was extremely helpful for me to realize feminism and nationalism in Japan. Hopefully, by using this background that I gained from my past experiences, and combining them with my own native background, I will carry this project to this summer. .
During the summer of 2002, I plan on focusing on the issues of nationalism and feminism in Japan and in Turkey for ten weeks. My major goal of doing this research project is to use the knowledge that I am going to gain from this experience for my future references, for instance I am planning to study in Japan in the spring semester of 2003, and my concentration for International Studies is also related to women's issues in Japan. Personally, I love to explore different cultures, different life styles, and how women differentiate in different societies. I believe that this research project will give me a great opportunity to take an in depth examination of the Japanese society and where women are placed. Secondly, I truly want to use my ethnic background in a project related to women. For have living in Turkey for eighteen years, I have gained immense experience about the placing of women in Turkish society by being a female myself.
